Wakita Onsen 脇田温泉
As autumn deepens the winds blow colder. Sounds like it’s time for an onsen, doesn’t it? Just about an hour’s drive from Fukuoka, along a river at the foothills of the Inunaki ridgeline, lies Wakita onsen. It’s said that the name Wakita (脇田) is a corruption of wakita (涌田), which literally means a field (田) from which water springs (湧). The type of water that wells forth is referred to as “beautiful woman’s water” for being high-sulfur, alkaline “simple-thermal” (for containing less than one thousand ppm of dissolved minerals) water with no color and full transparency. It has no stinky, sulfuric smell, and the moderate viscosity leaves the skin slightly slippery on climbing from the onsen—don’t towel dry if you can! In one onsen, water bubbles up from a big 150cm sake barrel made of hinoki cypress. And since the area is known for bamboo production, another bath is made of ten different kinds of bamboo. One outdoor bath sits in a garden for a particularly relaxing ambience. There are a slew of cleverly designed onsen here, with options ranging from overnight stays to the popular day-dips (we mean day trips). Submerge yourself in the outdoor bath and gaze away as the season transitions from autumn leaves to winter scenes. The babbling river and sighing of the wind will fill your ears, soothing your body and your mind. Miyawaka City tourism information: |
