Made for Japan

MADE FOR JAPAN is a project by Citypulse, conducted by Toshihiro Oshima, aiming to help the Japanese people heal their wounds. It is composed of 12 volumes created by 11 artists, 9 of them Japanese and 2 Spanish photographers, specially invited to the project. On August 11th, the group began regularly launching volumes. All profits will go to the Japanese Red Cross. There is a story from ancient India known as “Blind Men and an Elephant.” Six blind monks were asked to determine what an elephant looked like by feeling different parts of the elephant’s body. None of them had ever met a real elephant before. The blind man who feels a leg says the elephant is like a pillar; the one who feels the tail says the elephant is like a rope; the one who feels the trunk says the elephant is like a tree branch; the one who feels the ear says the elephant is like a hand fan; the one who feels the belly says the elephant is like a wall; and the one who feels the tusk says the elephant is like a solid pipe. The monks cannot agree with one another and come to blows over the question. Finally, the Master of the monks raises his voice and speaks his wisdom. “All of you are right and wrong. The reason all of you are telling it differently is because each one of you touched a different part. So, actually the elephant has all the features you mentioned and, above all, it’s a being which is beyond each of your descriptions….” What stemmed from March 11th, 2011 seems like a Giant Elephant. Everything stands before us like a great, endless wall. We all feel like we’ve lost our tongues, trying to express it in words. We are bewildered by the magnitude of the situation. I strongly believe each artist that contributed to our project “Made for Japan” has a unique voice that describes and characterizes the reality of this “Elephant” with sensitivity. Someone might say “It is like a Pillar” or “It feels like a Trunk”, “like a Rope,” etc… but I am certain each artists’ work combines to create a giant mosaic of the “Elephant,” revealing the truth hidden behind this iconic creature for the audience of the world, just like seeing the Geoglyphs of Nazca from the sky. MADE FOR JAPANは、Citypulseのプロジェクトのひとつ。日本の人々の傷を癒すことを目的とし、日本のキュレーターはToshihiro Oshimaさんだ。呼びかけられた11人のアーティストが、12集セットの写真集を発行する。参加者のうちの9人が日本人、2人はスペイン人。8月11日、定期的に発行される写真集の第一集をグループはリリースした。収益は日本赤十字へ寄付される。 古代仏教の言い伝えのひとつに「群盲撫象」の喩えがある。 生まれて以来象に出会った事のない6人の盲目の僧侶たちが初めて象に触れた時、ある僧侶は鼻を撫でながら「象とは大蛇のような生き物だ」と評し、足を撫でた者は「大木のような生き物だ」と評し、耳を触った者は「巨大なうちわのようなもの」だと評し、腹を触った者は「巨大な太鼓のような動物だ」と評し、しっぽを触った者は「ほうきのようだ」と評し、それぞれがそれぞれの触れた部分から象という生き物の全体像を想像するという物語である。 見かねた師が僧侶たちに向かって言う。「お前たちが言う<象>は正しくもあり、また間違ってもいる。それぞれが触れたのは象という動物の一部分であり、そこから象の全体像を描こうとしても無駄である。象はうちわのようでもあり、ほうきのようでもあり、大木のようでもあり、また大蛇のようでもある。それらすべてを合わせたより以上の何かなのだ。」 2011年3月11日以降の日本で私たちが直面している出来事はあたかもこの巨象のように我々の眼前に立ちはだかっているように思う。全てを語ろうにもどこから始めたらいいのか、私たちは途方にくれる事しか出来ない。 今回Made for Japanというプロジェクトの元集まってくれたアーティストはそれぞれの居場所から自らの声で自分たちだけが触れたこの<巨象>の真の姿を描いてくれるだろうと思う。ある人はそれが「巨木だ」と言い、ある人はそ れを「大蛇のようだ」と表現するかも知れない。 各々のアーティストが描くディテールの集まりがモザイクの如く相互に繋がりあい、個々のスケールを超えたこの<巨象>の全体像を現出させると信じてい る。遥か上空からナスカの地上絵を鳥瞰するが如く。 アートという言語を通して私たちに表現する機会をくれたCITYPULSE のGeorge Lever氏とCITYPULSEのスタッフに心から謝意を。 2011年8月 Toshihiro Oshima |
