Several years ago, we introduced Outdoor Japan, a beautiful bilingual, bimonthly magazine that we’ve always held as a kind of standard of our magazine publishing industry. Unfortunately, the 3-11 earthquake and tsunami disaster initially wiped out most of the inbound tourism on which the magazine thrived, and the publisher was forced to scramble.

Outdoor Japan, Inc. decided to rebrand. It renamed the magazine Outdoor Japan Traveler, went quarterly, and switched from a subscription model to a free magazine. Many might view this decision as the beginning of the death rattle, but the magazine came out looking as beautiful and strong as before. While we’re sad to see the glued-in spine replaced with staples, we understand and are glad to see that the publisher stuck with their bilingual format. It also maintains much of what made it so attractive before: excellent photography, colorful design and essential information for anyone wanting to enjoy sports and outdoor entertainment in Japan. The publisher is keen on the sustainability of print and we like that too.

数年前、美しいバイリンガルの隔月刊誌であり、私たち出版業のスタンダードとしてOutdoor Japanを紹介したことがある。残念なことに東日本大震災により、この雑誌を成功へと導いた外国からの観光客が激減し、発行人は奮闘を余儀なくされた。

Outdoor Japan社は、ブランドの再構築を試みることとした。雑誌名をOutdoor Japan Travelerと変更して季刊誌にし、定期購読者向け雑誌からフリーマガジンへと大きく舵を切った。この決断を、最期のあがきと見る人もいたが、雑誌は以前と変わらず美しい仕上がりとなっている。ホチキスで綴じる代わりに、背を接着剤で固めてしっかり綴じられた形に変更されたのは、少し寂しい気もするが、仕方の無いことだ。嬉しいのは、雑誌がバイリンガルの記事をぎっしり掲載していることだ。以前に魅力を感じていた点に変りはない。極めて上質な写真、色彩の美しいデザイン、誰もが知りたいと思っている日本のスポーツやアウトドアについての基本情報が掲載されている。同社は、雑誌を紙媒体で持続させることに尽力しており、私たちもそうありたいと思う。

Philip Roth is America’s most award-winning contemporary author, if not its best. Just now turning 80, he has written critically acclaimed work for 50 years. When he declared to a French magazine last year that he was retiring, it caused shock in the literary world. Even Oe Kenzaburo cites him as an influence.

Most consider his work in the 1990s his best, including the wickedly salacious Sabbath’s Theater (1995), which won the U.S. National Book Award, and the Pulitzer Prize winning American Pastoral (1997). His early work was successful, too, including his debut novel Goodbye Columbus (1959), which also won the National Book Award, and the controversial Portnoy’s Complaint.

Readers returning to Roth or discovering him for the first time may want to start with The Counterlife (1986). With this rich novel, Roth begins to achieve maturity as an author. It contains all the themes central to his canon: sexuality, Jewish identity, aging and the act of writing. The protagonist is urged by doctors to take medicine that will save his life but leave him sexually impotent. What’s a man (and his extramarital lover) to do?

Much of Roth’s work is available in Japanese translation.

アメリカの現代作家 フィリップ・ロス。最多の受賞歴を持つとまでは言わないまでも、最高の作家である。現在80歳の彼は、これまでの50年に及ぶ作家活動で批評家に称讃され続けてきた。昨年、フランスの雑誌に引退の意志を明らかにしたことで、文学界に衝撃が走った。大江健三郎でさえ影響を受けた作家として彼を挙げている。

彼の最も優れた作品は1990年代に発表されたものだと考える人が多いだろう。Sabbath’s Theater (1995)は煽情的な作品で、全米図書賞を受賞した。続いて、American Pastoral (1997)でピューリッツァー賞を受賞。もちろん彼の初期の作品も成功を収めている。全米図書賞を受賞したデビュー作 Goodbye Columbus (1959)「邦題：さよならコロンバス」、論争を巻き起こした Portnoy’s Complaint (1969)「邦題：ポートノイの不満」など。

ロスの作品を回帰したり、彼の作品を初めて手に取る読者には The Counterlife (1986)「邦題：配信の日々」をおすすめしたい。この重厚な作品で、ロスは作家としての円熟期を迎えた。この作品には、彼がテーマとしてきたものすべてが盛り込まれている。性的区別、ユダヤ人のアイデンティティ、老化、作家活動。この小説の主人公は、医者に薬をすすめられる。その薬により彼の命は救われるが、代わりに性的不全を引き起こすことになる。主人公の、そして不倫相手の取る決断は？
