“Inside Out” is a debut album like you’ll hear maybe once a decade. OK, so Shiraishi Toshizo was a veteran guitar player already, known for his work with the band Blissed and as a former bassist for Albatrus. Still, this solo guitar project is an achievement of note even for a master.

The opening track’s playful jazz eases listeners into familiar territory, but the second song, “Blissed Out,” is a 7:45 composition like an epic movie soundtrack with complex movements in a style much better characterized as contemporary classical—or maybe we should say an instant classic of world music.

More surprises wait in the album, including a couple of soothing tunes with alto male vocals from Marter in English. “Don’t Know Why” covers Norah Jones’ song of the same name in solo guitar to great effect. Arpeggios appear everywhere, lending the album a kind of hypnotic effect.

With 14 tracks “Inside Out” is a lengthy CD, but one you won’t likely tire of anytime soon. Not at least until Shiraishi releases a new one—may it be as great as this one.

「Inside　Out」は、デビューアルバムとしては10年に一枚の傑作になるはずだ。そう、白石才三はベテランのギタリスト。blissedでの活動や、Albatrusの初期ベーシストとしての活躍で知られる。ソロでの活動が続いており、演奏は達人の域に達している。

陽気な軽いジャズでアルバムは始まり、リスナーを彼のテリトリーへと容易に引き込んでいく。続く「Blissed Out」は7分45秒の曲で、大作映画のサウンドトラックのように複雑な動きを見せる。そのスタイルはコンテンポラリー・クラシック、はたまたワールドミュージックのインスタント・クラシックと言うべきか。

アルバムにはさらなるサプライズがある。男性アルト・ボーカリストのマーテルが参加する、心地よくうっとりさせられるような2曲だ。ノラ・ジョーンズのソロギター曲のカバー「Don’t know Why」も素晴らしい。そこかしこで奏でられるアルペジオは催眠効果をもたらすかのようだ。

14曲収録。ボリューム感たっぷりだが聞き飽きることのない1枚だ。少なくとも、本作に引けを取らない傑作となるであろう、彼のニューアルバムがリリースされるまでは。

Pacific Roots vol. 2 is the second installment of a compilation album celebrating “roots music” from Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific islands. Released this past June, it features sixteen tracks and is pleasant listening even if the summer is over.

The early warmth and cheerfulness of the album, as if you’re out on some sunny Pacific beach, derives from its emphasis on easy-listening reggae. The songs are mostly slow-groove material, but some are infused with influences of other genres like soul on “Hold Me Close” and “Save Me.”

The funky track “Luv Iz” shifts gears for the next five songs into more of an R&B sound, which ranges from soaring female vocals on “I Love You Too” to more of a slow dance vibe on “The Things We Do for Love.” The last three miscellaneous tracks include an acoustic ballad, a powerful soul performance from Hollie Smith and an R&B pop song.

Nothing on the album is extremely memorable—there are perhaps no instant classics here—but neither are there any sub-par tunes. Well balanced and pleasing, it promises good things to come for a future volume 3.

Pacific Roots vol.2 はオーストラリアやニュージーランド、太平洋の島々のルーツ・ミュージックに焦点を当てたコンピレーションアルバム。今年6月にリリースされた。16曲収録で、夏が去った後に聴いても心地よい曲が並ぶ。

アルバムはあたたかく陽気なトーンで始まり、太陽が降り注ぐ太平洋のビーチにいるような気分になる。そこからソフトで聞きやすいレゲエへと移ってゆく。収録曲の多くはゆったりとグルーヴ感があり、ソウルなど他ジャンルに影響を受けた「Hold Me Close」や「Save Me」といった曲もある。

ファンキーな曲「Luv Iz」では続く5曲へのギアが入り、女性ボーカルが歌いあげる「I Love You Too」からスローなダンス・バイブ「The Things We Do for Love」へと、アルバムはよりR＆Bの色彩を濃くしてゆく。締めくくりの3曲はアコースティックなバラードとHollie Smithの力強いソウル、そしてR&Bのポップソングだ。

極端に印象を残す曲はないものの、インスタントな定番曲は入っておらず、捨て曲もない。第3弾のリリースを期待しつつ、最後までバランス良く楽しめるアルバムだ。
