The Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, colloquially known as Yamakasa, is perhaps Japan’s most exciting traditional festival. Held every year from July 1st to the 15th, the festival boasts several hundred years of history and culminates with a dramatic, high-speed float race through the old city’s streets before dawn on the 15th. It combines beauty, tradition, strength, adrenaline and, often, ample amounts of alcohol.

Fukuoka is baking hot this time of year, even with its seaside breezes, but this is a great time to stroll the older parts of the city in the Hakata and Nakasu area, where the various nagare (think “teams”) representing the various old districts display their enormous ceremonial floats, called kazariyama. These are works of art and craftsmanship, featuring various hand-made dolls and characters. Kazariyama were actually used once in the float race, but with modern times and low-hanging electric wires, they became impractical and slightly smaller, but still enormously heavy, race floats are used instead on the 15th. Teams of men in traditional uniforms guard the floats around the clock, and each day hosts some kind of ceremony or test run. History truly comes alive these two weeks.

On 4:59 on the morning of the 15th, floats take off from Kushida Shrine at regular intervals, racing through the winding 5km city course. Men in fundoshi (loin cloths) and happi coats carry the enormous floats as they run, performing substitutions of members along the way without stopping. It’s frighteningly dangerous and exciting to watch. And watch the people do: nearly a million line the streets for this event, with more than a few of them drinking all night long. We’ve certainly been guilty of such unofficial festive practice!

博多祇園山笠は「やまかさ」と呼ばれ親しまれており、日本で最も心躍る伝統的な祭りのひとつだ。毎年7月1日から15日に開催され、数百年間続く歴史を誇りにしている。15日の夜明け前には旧市街の通りを笠が走り抜けるレースが行われ、劇的なクライマックスを迎える。華麗さ、伝統、勇壮さ、高揚感・陶酔感、そして多量に消費されるお酒が入り交じる祭りだ。

この時期の福岡はたとえ海からの風が吹いても焼け付くように暑いが、それでもこの時期に博多と中洲エリアの古い街並を散策したい。「流（ながれ）」と呼ばれる古い地区を代表するチームがあり、それぞれの流には巨大な山笠「飾り山」が飾られるからだ。芸術と工芸の匠の技で造られ、手作りの人形やキャラクターを主役に据えている。かつてはレースでも飾り山を舁いて（かいて）いたが、電線が普及した後はいくぶん高さを抑えたものになった。これが15日に行われるレースで代わりに使われるようになった、「舁き山笠」である。それでもかなり大きく重量がある。伝統的な衣装を纏った流の男たちが山笠を24時間体制で守り、毎日様々な儀式が行われ、リハーサルが繰り返される。まさにこの二週間には歴史が生き生きとよみがえる。

7月15日の早朝4時59分、山笠が一定の間隔を空けて櫛田神社から出発する。市街地を抜ける5kmのタイムレースだ。褌と法被を纏った男たちが巨大な山笠を走り運ぶ。男たちは担ぐのを交替するときも全く止まることはなく、その様は見所だ。見物する人々にとっても、恐ろしいほどに危険で刺激的。この祭りには100万もの人出があり、人々は夜通しお酒を楽しむ。もちろんお酒を楽しむのも祭りの一部だ！
