Razoku’s most recent album, “Wonderland,” actually came out nearly a year ago, but it’s taken us that long to get our heads around it. It’s not some weird, experimental sound album. Quite the opposite, its pop-like vocals and bright, warm sound seem deceptively simple, almost mainstream prog-rock, as if Razoku were scheming to get some radio play, despite their underground roots. But over time and deep listening, the rich guitar textures and riffs float to the surface in pleasing little sonic ripples and whirlpools. The title song, “Wonderland,” (viewable on YouTube) typifies much of the album’s candy-apple sound, though songs like “mannaka” delve into funk, and “mizutamari” into a grungier sound more common at live shows. If you can see Razoku live, do it. Front man(iac) Koshino Ryuta’s guitar will leave a blistering trail of notes as his psychedelic-punk-bitch muse possesses him. When he breaks into blinding heavy metal riffs, virgin show-comers will say, “but I thought Razoku played pop.” Imagine John Mayer beating Metallica in a guitar battle. It’s kind of like that. Koshino also steps in as a guitarist for all-star jam band Albatrus (see last issue).

らぞくのニューアルバム「WONDERLAND」は一年ほど前にリリースされたが、このアルバムがどういうものなのか分かるまでにかなりの時間を要した。風変わりではなく実験的なサウンドでもない。ポップスのようなボーカルと明るく温かい音色はシンプルに聞こえるが、実は複雑なプログレッシブ・ロックのよう。アンダーグラウンドをルーツにするらぞくだが、このニューアルバムでは、ラジオで流されやすい音を作っているかのようだ。しかし何度も深く聞き続けるうちに、豊かなギターのテクスチャやリフが、心地よい音の波紋や渦の表面に浮かび上がってきた。YouTubeで見られるアルバムタイトル曲 “Wonderland”は、りんごあめのように甘いこのアルバムの音を代表する曲。ファンクを掘り下げた”真ん中”、ライブでよく演奏されるグランジ・サウンドの”水たまり”といった曲も収録されている。ライブに行けるなら、ぜひ見に行こう。フロントマン越野竜太のギターは、まるでサイケデリック・パンクの女神が彼に憑依したかのような激しい音の軌跡を残す。目の眩むようなメタル系ギターリフの乱入を目にしたライブ初見の客は「だって、らぞくはポップスだと思ってたのに」と言うだろう。ジョン・メイヤーがギターバトルでメタリカを負かす姿を想像してほしい、そんな感じなのだ。越野は本誌前号で紹介したオールスター・ジャムバンドの「Albatrus」にもギタリストとして参加している。
