“I was interested in color, light and sensation. I wanted to somehow express that in my painting.” And so Soya Asae’s distinct style was born, just out of school, winning her several prestigious awards beginning in 2001.

But her style, like dreams and hallucinations brought to a canvas, underwent an abrupt change around 2008. She was asked to create a painting for the inside of the Breeze Breeze building (Osaka) that would span six levels. The plan was to take one of her works, blow it up, then cut it into segments and put it on each floor, but says Soya, “When you blow up an oil painting, it doesn’t look so good. With watercolor, the texture is interesting.”

She has been asked to create art in other installations since then, like the Zaim building (Yokohama) and the Shiseido Gallery (Tokyo). “I realized that with each project, I had to start with a new approach so it would fit the installations, and so my style keeps changing.” In Zaim, she cut plastic sheets into shapes and decorated the windows. In the Shiseido Gallery, she once again used plastic sheets she had painted to decorated the walls, the plastic coming from corporate sponsorships.

Now Soya is back to painting in a style similar to some of her early work, like the Circles series. She says a painting can take her from a month to three months to complete. “But I paint several at the same time. There is a relationship between them. While painting one, I am thinking about another.”

「私が関心を持っていたのは、色彩・光・身体感覚—そういうものを表現したいと思いました。」曽谷朝絵の独自のスタイルはそうして生まれた。大学を卒業して間もなく、2001年頃からいくつかの栄誉ある賞を得るようになっていった。

しかし、まるで夢や幻影をキャンバスに映すような彼女のスタイルは2008年頃に突然、変化する。大阪 BREEZE BREEZEビルの６階を貫く吹き抜けの内壁のペインティングを、彼女は依頼された。制作プランは、自身の作品の一つを拡大し、それを断片にカットし各階に置いてみるというもの。しかし曽谷は言う。「油絵の具で描いた作品を拡大してみたら、あまり良い出来ではなかったんです。代わりに水性絵の具の作品を拡大してみたら面白い質感になりました。」

以来、横浜のZAIMや資生堂ギャラリー（東京）など、インスタレーションの依頼を受けてきた。「ひとつひとつのプロジェクトを仕上げていくうちに気づいたことがあります。それぞれのインスタレーションにぴったり合うように、いつも新しいアプローチで始める必要がありました。そうして私のスタイルは変わり続けています。」 ZAIMの作品では、ビニールシートをカットして窓を飾った。資生堂ギャラリーでもビニールシートを使用した。こちらでは切り取ったビニールシートに彩色し、それを壁に飾っている。このビニールシートはスポンサーから提供されたものだ。

曽谷はいま、「Circles」シリーズなど初期の作品に似たスタイルのペインティングに戻ってきている。彼女は、ひとつの作品を１ヶ月から３ヶ月かけて仕上げていると話してくれた。「でもね、私は一度にいくつかの作品を同時に手がけるんです。作品どうしには何かしらの結びつきがあります。ひとつの作品を描いているとき、私はもうひとつの作品のことも考えているんです。」
