Earth Garden

Earth Garden is an attractive, seasonal free magazine for those who love outdoor culture. It contains a wealth of information on outdoor music events and festivals, the musicians who participate in those festivals, Fairtrade products, organic gardening and other outdoor activities such as hiking and camping. Interviews are another feature of the magazine. Consumers interested in sustainable lifestyles will enjoy the many products showcased in the pages as well. The design is superior to most Japanese free magazines that just pack in as much product information as they can in a gaudy, confusing layout. Although Earth Garden does use all the space that it can, it is attractively arranged with warm colors and plenty of bright pictures. It is on B5-size paper (the same as Koe) with nice texture owing to the eco-pulp and environmentally friendly printing practices it uses. Earth Garden, alas, is all in Japanese, but if you can’t read it, why not grab a friend who can and read it together? The time together will be well spent. |
「Earth Garden」は、アウトドア・カルチャーを愛する人たち向けの魅力的な季刊のフリーマガジンだ。屋外音楽フェスティバルやイベント、そのステージに立つアーティスト、フェアトレード商品、有機園芸、ハイキングやキャンプなど、豊富な情報が満載されている。インタビュー記事も特徴のひとつだ。そして、サステイナブル・ライフスタイル（持続可能な生活、LOHAS）に関心のある読者には、雑誌で紹介されているたくさんの商品も楽しめるだろう。 雑誌のデザインは、スペースの許す限り商品情報を派手な見た目で詰め込もうとする日本の多くのフリーペーパーよりも優れている。 Earth Garden もすべてのスペースをできるだけ使っているけれど、暖色でまとめられた色使いと生き生きした沢山の写真によって魅力的に整えられている。B5サイズ（Koe Magazineと同じ大きさ）の用紙を使い、エコパルプ（無塩素漂白パルブ）と環境にやさしい印刷技術のおかげで、ざらっとした素敵な手触りになっている。 悲しいかな、Earth Garden は日本語のみで書かれている。あなたが日本語を読めなくても、日本語を読める友人を捕まえて一緒に読んでみてはどうだろう？一緒に読み過ごす時間は、きっと価値ある時間のはず。 |
Waiting for the Barbarians
| J.M.Coetzee is arguably one of the world’s best writers in English, having won the Nobel Prize on top of every other prestigious literary award. He has also earned the praise of critics and readers alike for his piercing treatment of moral dilemmas. Most of his work is highly political, drawing in part from the many years he lived and wrote in South Africa (he is now an Australian citizen). In several of his works, politics is closely tied to the body. Waiting for the Barbarians takes place on a colonial border town and deals with torture, among other themes. The book received renewed interest after the vivid images of torture by U.S. soldiers in Iraq. Perhaps his most celebrated work, Disgrace, deals in large part with the racial aftermath of an act of violence. He is also a prominent proponent of animal rights, and has written extensively about their treatment. |
J.M.クッツェーはノーベル文学賞を始め数々の権威ある文学賞の受賞歴を持つ小説家で、世界でもトップクラスの文学者。彼はまた、道徳上のジレンマを容赦なく批判した文学者として評論家からも読者からも高い評価を得ている。生まれ故郷である南アフリカでの経験などをもとに書かれた彼の作品はどれも大変思慮深い分析力に溢れ（現在はオーストラリアの市民権を獲得）、高度に政治的なテーマを扱いながらも同時に人間存在の奥深くを扱った緻密な構成の作品も多い。植民地の辺境の町を舞台にした「夷狄（いてき）を待ちながら」では拷問がテーマになっていて、同作は米兵によるイラク人捕虜暴行事件をきっかけに再度注目されることとなった。代表作「恥辱」では性欲に負けて暴力事件を起こしてしまった男のなれの果てを描いている。動物愛護家としても知られ、「動物のいのち」という著作もある。 作品の多くは和訳されているので是非クッツェーの世界に触れてみて欲しい。 |
